AN UPDATE ON THE MINNETONKA TRADING POST

Some time ago i wrote a piece on the rapid decline of the Minnetonka Trading Post on Route 66 in Arizona. It’s not often I get to add a positive update, but I have been delighted to see that, under new ownership, the Minnetonka is being beautifully regenerated. Only some of the petrified wood wall could be saved (too many people helping themselves to it) but it looks grand!

  1. I am trying to find info on a small reptile/snake trading post. They advertised it along the hwy as having a 30 foot python. It would have been around ‘53 or ‘54 when I went there with my parents. I think it was in NM but not sure. They had rattlesnake’s and at least two cobras and the giant python. Also an alligator in a pit said to be 400 years old. They had rickety cages with thin glass. The giant python was curled up the size of a large man. When it raised up its large head and looked at me my Dad pulled me away from cage and we left. It was the scariest thing I had ever seen. I can’t find any information on the place and I would love to see some pictures of it and hear its history. Surely there is someone left out there that remembers that place. Thank you. 2. I visited the trading post in the summer of 1975 in search of my Navy friend Shaw who’s family owned the trading post at the time. His mother informed me that her son had gone to the city. I believe she meant the Phoenix area.

Mr. Shaw and I were stationed at NAS Point Mugu, Ca. until his discharge at around 1972 or 1973? I cannot recall his first name but have pictures of all us sailors around the helicopters that we serviced.

So many memories of long ago. It’s sad to hear the trading post took a down turn and happy that it is being renovated. Hope to to visit it again soon.
